Throughout history, people have made sacrifices, changes, and big decisions that later sometimes result in something grand. These grand occurrences can either be good or bad. Usually as time goes on these events and most well-known people of this time are highlighted in history classes for students to learn and to honor those of that time. However, some of the smaller people that contributed to historical events aren’t as highlighted as those that were seen as the big leaders. For example, in the American Revolution, the people that usually come to mind are George Washington, Paul Revere, and Thomas Jefferson. What about the people who were injured, scared and killed because of this bloody war? They seem to be forgotten until they are highlighted once again. The NetVis Module is no doubt a power-packed web-based tool that illustrates the development of social network analysis. Moreover, the said tool presents a lot of opportunities to those who has a need for it when it comes to analysis and visualization of the relationships within a defined set of persons, groups, etc. As an example, Wayne Baker (2000) stressed the importance of network analysis to identify and build strong team relationships, which would in turn result to organizational success. With this, the impression I got was that all areas of study relative to SNA are possible. This impression arose as I was exploring the site. First, I think exploring the site is quite easy. Just by clicking a button, I could perform a task or go to a page I want to view. For example, the links on the resources page clearly outline the different SNA software tools and what they could do. The web sites linked to the NetVis site provide a wider and a more diverse perspective on how SNA works in different fields of application. However, contrary to the ease of use is the difficulty in understanding the technical terms of the NetVis Module. This would lead me to my second point, which I would like to talk more about. With all the technical jargons, I think the NetVis site is designed for technical experts or professionals who have a need for the software. Technical knowledge or at the least familiarity in mathematical sequences, statistics and other related topic areas is a prerequisite   in order to maximize the use of this tool. Although there is an explanation box for each â€Å"heavy† term such as geodesics, transitivity, split value, etc., it is still difficult to analyze and/or interpret data coming from the point of view of a novice. To further my point, I tried the NetVis Module Tutorial. I followed each step, reading instructions carefully and revising my input data before I could get an analysis and a network visualization. What I did was create two social networks with five members for each group. These were, in reality, my two sets of friends. The â€Å"meta tag† I used was secret sharing wherein the question to be asked for each member is â€Å"How much information do you share with ____?† Collecting the matrix data using an improvised five-point scale and following the rest of the instructions, I was ready and pretty excited to view the analysis and visualization of my sample social networks. Before making a full interpretation, I needed to understand first the tools for analysis because it is hard to derive a conclusion just by looking at all the data matrices. I checked all the definitions for degree, betweenness and closeness centrality. I gave special attention to the definitions of density, transitivity, structural holes and split value. I also checked the sub-tools for analysis such as constraint, effective size, efficiency, hierarchy, reachability, shortest path and so on. Finally, the over-all conclusion I got was that the first social network or the members of my first set of friends are more closely-knit (based on the answers that members of this group share â€Å"secrets† or personal and sensitive information with each other more often) compared to the members of the other group. This was primarily illustrated by the higher values in bridges, ties and shortest path between each pair of â€Å"actors† and among all members of the group. However, it is also worth noting that the difference in values between the two groups is not that big (0.2 to 0.3 difference only). I found the results interesting because it is through this tool that I realized that my friends coming from two different groups have trust and confidence with each other on the basis of sharing personal and sensitive information. For a student, this is one practical use of the NetVis Module. In fact, I am looking forward to do more â€Å"experiments† using this tool—creating other social networks with the integration of other factors such as geographical distance, which I have not included in my first trial. I could also try to analyze a larger group and see who the key players are or who plays the role of a leader. This could be done by looking at the core and periphery actors or members of the group. I could also try to find out who among the members of a group are â€Å"somewhat unreachable† (no path exists) by other members. Aside from those mentioned, there are still lots to demonstrate about the relationships among members of a particular group. These are just some of the things I would like to look into. Apart from personal use, I think the NetVis Module, with its relatively intricate procedures and tools for analysis, is primarily designed for organizations and institutions advancing certain academic, business, social, political, cultural, and economic purpose. I think that this is one limitation of this web-based tool—not everybody could use it. Of course I understand that this is not really for everyone. It is distributed for free with the hope that it would be helpful to those who need it. Knowing this we as a nation need to take a stand and make changes now, not ten years from now. Global warming trendsetters are paving the path towards a better world by trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But with every action there of course is a reaction. Many SUVs supporters have geared up towards the cause claiming that SUV drivers are socially conscious and think before they pollute. Take a look at the thinking behind an SUV ad that appeared in Washington DC funded by an outfit known as the Sport Utility Vehicle Owners of America (SUVOA). Analysis of the salient features of Beck’s cognitive theory Essay Beck’s cognitive theory assumes that most psychological problems arise from faulty thinking processes. The theory is centred on three factors that form what can be illustrated as a triad. Beck (1976) noted that the three factors that affect the human mind’s capabilities are thoughts, antecedent events and behavior (Figure 1). Figure 1: The foundation of Beck’s (1976) concept of the cognitive theory Source: Created from the description by Bandura (1976) A point worth noting is that these factors cannot act on their own as they do so in synergy with other factors. For instance, behavior is affected by the environment; thoughts are affected by the self (individual); and antecedent events are influenced by the current events. Beck’s cognitive theory perceives antecedent events, thoughts and behavior to be dynamic. In addition, according to (1998), each of the three constituents of the triad is capable of affecting others. However, Beck (1976) notes that in evaluating the triad, cognition or thoughts require more emphasis. This is because it is through thoughts that human beings are able to change their beliefs, attitudes, interpretation and perceptions in different instances. Moreover, thoughts or cognitive factors serve as a platform for filtering or appraising events. In line with this, if the human mind is biased towards one event at the expense of another, the thinking process would elicit some form of emotional and behavioral responses that would imply some problems in life. Therefore, according to this theory, the way human beings think could actually change the way they feel and behave. The cognitive theory serves as a way of understanding and treating depression due to the approach it takes in addressing the various faculties of the mind. In addition, since it highlights issues related to mental capabilities, it is appropriate for addressing mental health issues and other instances of disorders that arise due to depression or factors such as substance use. In postulating the theory, Beck was of the opinion that depressed people often have low opinion of themselves. Precisely, Beck suggested that depressed people believe that the world, their future, and they themselves were the causes of their depression. In addition, Beck (1998) noted that people might be faced with psychological difficulties due to occurrence of automatic thoughts, negative self-assessments and dysfunctional assumptions. Moreover, Beck connoted that automatic thoughts usually pave the way for emotions but occur considerably fast with the affected individual’s little awareness. As a result, such individuals do not view themselves with high esteem. As an example, people affected by stress may address themselves in considerably high critical tones; they also blame themselves for every mishap that befalls them. Beck’s theory and depression Beck (1987) noted that depressed people, apart from having a low opinion of themselves, also develop schemas in their minds such as â€Å"if many people hate me then I am worthless. † Nevertheless, such beliefs are usually primitive, overstated and rigid. It is worthy noting that the self schemas developed in the minds pf distressed people are usually stable but latent and only discernible when they are stimulated by social stressors (for instance when a person provokes the distressed individual) (Beck, 1987). Once the distressed person is provoked, the depressive diagram in the mind of the individual becomes activated by the stress of the event (provocation) and results into a two-fold consequence (Beck, 1976). The first effect is that the content of the distressed person becomes negative. This is characterized by a cognitive triad and the person develops negative beliefs about himself or herself, the world and the future (i. e. every aspect of the cognitive triad becomes negative). In the second phase, there is a systematic bias in the mind that characterized by distortion of information processing capability and being prone to committing errors. Although not all forms of depression are caused by stimulation of the self-schemas, Beck viewed the negative cognitive triad and negative processing of information as the intrinsic features of all depressions (Beck, 1987). The result of the negative schema is fear for all activities by the individual. This is in spite of the fact that some activities could be easily accomplished. For instance, a negative evaluation of self worth may be â€Å"I am unworthy, I just can’t do this†; and a negative evaluation of the world or daily events may be â€Å"Everything that happens to me is just enough evidence that my world is crumbling, this world does not need me. † On the other hand, a distressed person’s evaluation of the future may be â€Å"It seems that nothing will ever get better for me even in future. † From the above illustration, Becks Cognitive Model of Depression clearly shows how early experiences in life can lead to the development of dysfunctional beliefs, which in turn cause individuals to have negative self-views, which in turn result into depression (Beck, 1987).

The Victorian people had paradoxical views because they would go out drinking and also the porn industry was famous out side public life. Beliefs in religion were having a turn point because of the introduction of science in to the Victorian era. Victorians were expected to live a life of Puritanism. The main characters in this text are Dr Jekyll, Mr Hyde, Mr Utterson and Mr Enfield, Dr Lanyon and Poole the butler. Purpose of higher education Essay

The purpose of higher education has been a topic of debate for many years. There was a long period when the majority agreed that higher education is the key to success, there is nothing to argue about that. However, nowadays, regarding having higher education as an investment, many people, especially students, think that what they lose is much bigger than what they gain from higher education. In other words, they believe that what higher education brings them does not deserve what they pay for it. In my opinion, what we benefit from higher education cannot be measured by money. For me, the highest purpose of higher education is to create prepared minds, which are priceless. At the same time, the unfortunate results that students get from higher education, I believe, are due to the dishonest ways they use to deal with the exams and unpleasant situation when having higher education. Stop cheating and understand thoroughly the purpose of higher education, we will definitely recognize the benefit we gain from it. Cheating, as mentioned above, is the act of using dishonest methods to get rewards or to deal with obstacles. Regarding the scene of higher education, cheating includes â€Å"cribbing homework, plagiarizing essays from the Internet, or texting test answers to a friend’s cell phone† (Studies Shed Light on How Cheating Impedes Learning, Sarah). Students just do anything they can to get an â€Å"A† and graduate with their degree on time. However, it is just the delusion of success. The highest purpose of higher education is not to have as many graduated students as possible. Teachers can just take the pen and give as many As to students as they want, then their jobs are done. Students do not even need to attend the exams. Nevertheless, that universities hold exams is not to set scores for students. Exams are meant to check whether students’ knowledge and skills are enough for the next level, for their life or not. Cheating may help students to get rewards for the short-run but will surely bring them nothing in the long-run. Put those cheating acts aside and take a closer look again at the purpose of higher education, we can see that  there are skills and knowledge that we can learn from nowhere but higher education. Without those basic tools, we will step into life dazzling with new things and great challenges. If by any chance we miss any of those skill and knowledge, it is necessary to come back and learn again, until we get what we need. Unfortunately, many students are not aware of the importance of doing so. According to Lucas’s blog, â€Å"students feel they are getting ahead when they cheat† and â€Å"students who cheat deceive themselves into believing they deserve better grades†. They do not know that they actually â€Å"are falling into a feedback loop in which they fall further and further behind†. Besides, it is necessary to emphasize that the prepared minds that higher education creates are not used only for getting a stable career, but also for dealing with problems in our jobs, family and life. Coming to these micro areas, cheating is no more just a simple act that can be fixed or even ignored. The consequences from plagiarism (one type of cheating) are much more severe, when we can even be imprisoned. I totally agree with Lucas when he says in his blog that â€Å"students who cheat in high school are more likely to be dishonest as adult in the workplace†. We should adjust our behavior appropriately to prevent forming bad habits as well as to achieve the right purpose of higher education. Last but not least, it is the most important question that how we can achieve the purpose of higher education? How can we have prepared minds from higher education? The answer is simple but the action is not: discourage cheating; stand on our own foot and make all the effort that we have. Teacher needs to help students understand the â€Å"importance of academic integrity and learning, not just grades, can make them less likely to cheat†. The three methods that Lucas mentioned are the least that teachers should do: â€Å"carefully reduce opportunities to cheat†; â€Å"establishing class or school honor codes† and â€Å"discuss the importance of academic integrity prior to each assignment†. In conclusion, it is true that everyone has the incentives to find easy ways to get rewards or to deal with unpleasant situations. However, cheating to succeed only brings us delusion of success. It is extremely dangerous when we apply dishonest ways to pass the higher e ducation time. The purpose of higher education is surely compromised by cheating acts and if we are not aware of that, we may gain a lot at the beginning but in the end, we will get nothing.

Since the founding of the first school for deaf students in the U.S. in 1817, literacy has been a primary educational goal for the deaf. Many different communication approaches such as oral/auditory communication, total communication, and bilingual/bicultural communication have been used in the pursuit of this goal. Despite almost 200 years of attention, DHH students are still leaving school with language skills that are grossly underdeveloped and, in many cases, are not even achieving functional literacy. This study focuses on the research question of what serves effectively to improve deaf students’ acquisition of new reading vocabulary in the third grade. A questionnaire was designed to gather teachers’ views on the most effective approaches that enable students to achieve greater academic success in building vocabulary: oral/auditory communication, total communication, or bilingual/bicultural
